NEORT is pleased to announce "SCREENS CONTEXTUALIZED," an exhibition to be held as an official program of DIG SHIBUYA in February 2026. This project reimagines the digital signage scattered throughout the city not merely as advertising media, but as a new stage for cultural expression, showcasing artworks on these screens. As part of SCREENS CONTEXTUALIZED, this OPEN CALL opens the signage within MIYASHITA PARK as a space for digital art expression. Utilizing the large-scale signage network within this commercial facility, we offer artists from around the world an opportunity to challenge new possibilities of expression in urban spaces. Selected works will not only be displayed during DIG SHIBUYA but will also be utilized continuously as public art, with the premise of regular exhibition at MIYASHITA PARK going forward.
Shibuya City's Miyashita Park has been reshaping Tokyo's spatial economy as a "third ground"—neither surface nor rooftop. In 1953, Miyashita Park was established as part of post-war reconstruction plans in the "Miyashita-cho" area of Jingumae, Shibuya. In 1966, against the backdrop of infrastructure development for the Tokyo Olympics, it was rebuilt on an artificial platform as the first "rooftop park" in Tokyo, with the intention of "greening the upper level" above parking lots and transportation infrastructure concentrated at the underground and ground levels. In 2020, through public-private partnership (PPP) urban development, Mitsui Fudosan joined the project, and it was reborn as "MIYASHITA PARK"—a mixed-use project integrating a park, parking facilities, commercial complex, and hotel. Thus, Miyashita Park is physically and historically an "urban space lifted into the air, separated from the ground"—a rare public domain existing between the city's surface and sky. This project takes this vertical environmental quality and "aerial nature" of the urban space as a starting point, making sky-related phenomena the subject of poetic interpretation.

The sky constantly produces different patterns through various meteorological phenomena every day. Cloud formations, precipitation trajectories, wind movements, and changes in light are natural processes that continuously update over time, always in flux and transformation. This open call seeks works that perceive these meteorological phenomena as "agents of drawing" and interpret the changes created by the sky (weather) as "poetic phenomena." While considering the spatial characteristics of Miyashita Park situated in the air, the aim is to express the phenomenon of meteorology above the city.
Weather is also the most familiar environmental layer for any city. The shapes of clouds, the way light penetrates, the flow of wind, the humidity and temperature of the air—these changes naturally seep into our daily sensations while transforming moment by moment. Particularly, a park—a space opened between ground and sky—is where weather's influence is felt most directly. This endeavor intends to contrast the rhythm of commercial space's velocity with that of weather—sometimes dynamic, sometimes so gradual as to be imperceptible. "Weather Writes" is also an attempt to rediscover another layer that exists between the city and nature, and to draw out the diverse possibilities hidden within.
Public art refers to works installed in public spaces such as parks, plazas, and streets. SCREENS CONTEXTUALIZED does not intend to create temporary excitement around signage, but rather focuses on the continuous cultural utilization of signage. Therefore, works selected through this open call are treated as comparable to public art, enabling MIYASHITA PARK to exhibit them continuously even outside the DIG SHIBUYA period, with the intention of establishing them as culture within public spaces. Please note that this does not guarantee permanent exhibition of the works. Additionally, copyright of the works remains with the artists; within this project, the facility only obtains permission for continuous display. Whenever works are displayed, they will always be accompanied by proper credit notation.

MIYASHITA PARK plans to install new outdoor signage in 2026. Eight triangular prism signage units standing 3.5m tall will be installed along the promenade, and a 6m × 7m signage display is planned for the elevator façade beyond. These will also be eligible for the OPEN CALL, with details to be announced separately. Stay tuned.
