MADE FOR THIS CITY  この都市のために。

Art that belongs here -TOKYO-. / ここにしかない作品を、東京。

Tokyo is a city forever overflowing with information. And precisely because of this, things that matter, and things that seem trivial, may pass us by unnoticed.

We pause within that current, just for a moment. We pose a small question. If we could take in the streams of information, the advertisements, the art, and receive each in our own way, on our own terms, would this city look a little different to us?

MADE FOR THIS CITY is a project that entrusts artworks to artists who hold a certain city in their thoughts. What does "TOKYO" mean to them? That is what we want to ask. A work conceived for one place will surely wear a different expression when placed somewhere else. A piece made for Ginza will reveal another face in Shibuya. And that "other face" becomes the quiet proof that the work truly belonged to the place it was made for.

MADE FOR THIS CITY is also an encounter. An encounter between artists who have yet to meet one another. Artcrush and NEORT, together with collaborators based all around the world, gather in this city to spend time, slowly, with Tokyo. What does this city mean to each of us? That is what we want to see.

Within the images broadcast from signage, those landmarks of the urban landscape, can we sense a meaning different from the one we usually find there? Through this collaboration, we hope that signage, normally a "surface for selling," might become, even for an instant, a "surface for feeling." We hope that works created for this place will reach the people who see them, in whatever form that may take.

A single beautiful place, somewhere in the city. A place that someone passing by might glance up at, and, without knowing quite why, carry home with them. From all over the world, expression gathers here, toward Tokyo. That is the place we are working toward.
